Sysco’s SAP system is retiring and 5 years’ worth of enterprise data (Sales, Demand Planning, TMS, etc.,) lying in their Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW) IBM Netezza, needs to be preserved for historical reporting and business analytics purpose. Given the fact of higher operating/maintenance cost of storing data in Netezza, cloud storage services in AWS has been identified as a viable alternative to keep this data for further analytics usage.

Ø  Analyzed the usage of SAP EDW data using the Netezza query history logs for a specific period of time to identify the potential tables that need to be migrated to AWS S3/Redshift.

Ø  Automated the process of extracting the data from Netezza tables into external flat files, loaded the data into AWS S3 cloud storage in compressed format (.csv.gz).

Ø  There were instances where the Netezza tables with the same name present in various SAP schemas. These situations were handled meticulously in the automated data migration process so that the data will not be overwritten across the schemas and separate versions of the data gets stored in S3.

Ø  There were really large Netezza tables with the size of more than 600 GB. Migration of the data from these tables was handled with the data splits identified based on the Netezza audit fields.

Ø  Handled various data quality checks to check the non-ASCII characters in the extracted data stream and converted them form Latin-9 to Utf-8 to keep the data integrity between Netezza and AWS S3.

Ø  Checked for Carriage Return/Line Feeds (CR/LF) in the data stream and cleaned them up before loading the data into the target data storage in AWS S3.

Ø  Executed POCs to identify the best storage format in AWS S3 for the extracted data from Netezza. These POCs were to find out the performance of the queries while retrieving the data from AWS S3 and enable the mechanism to let the business users connect to the data stored in AWS S3 to get their reports and other details. In order to measure the performance, different AWS S3 file formats like .csv.gz, .parquet.gz were used and analyzed.

Ø  Created Athena external tables using Hive DDL to point to the data stored in AWS S3.

Ø  Executed Athena queries on both partitioned and non-partitioned external tables and measured the performance of each combination.

Ø  Worked on setting up S3 bucket policies, IAM console management activities.

Ø  Working on POC/framework to distinguish/define the usage of Redshift-Spectrum.
